UV light

UV-light explained

UV-light, or ultraviolet light, is a type of electromagnetic radiation that has a wavelength shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays. UV-light is commonly found in sunlight and is responsible for causing sunburn and other types of skin damage. It is also used in various applications such as sterilization, fluorescence, and printing.

UV-light can be further divided into three categories based on their wavelengths: UVA, UVB, and UVC.

  • UVA, known as long-wave UV radiation, is responsible for tanning and premature aging of the skin. UVA radiation has a wavelength range of 320-400 nm and accounts for 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth's surface. UVA radiation penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB radiation and can cause long-term skin damage, including premature aging and increased risk of skin cancer.

  • UVB has a shorter wavelength and is responsible for sunburn and skin cancer. UVB radiation, known as medium-wave UV radiation, has a wavelength range of 280-320 nm and is responsible for most of the skin redness and sunburn caused by sun exposure. UVB radiation also contributes to skin damage and skin cancer, but it is much less likely to penetrate deep into the skin than UVA radiation.

  • UVC has the shortest wavelength and is absorbed by the ozone layer, so it is not typically a concern for human exposure. UVC radiation, also known as short-wave UV radiation, has a wavelength range of 100-280 nm and is the most dangerous form of UV radiation. However, UVC radiation is almost completely absorbed by the Earth's ozone layer and does not reach the Earth's surface.

Exposure to UV-light can have both beneficial and harmful effects, and it is important to protect oneself from overexposure through the use of sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours.
